Bear, created by artist Tim Hawkinson, is the latest addition to the outdoor works of art in UCSD’s Stuart Collection. Comprised of eight massive boulders relocated from the Pala Band of Mission Indians Reservation north of San Diego, Bear is 370,000 pounds and over 20 feet tall. (Bear’s torso alone, is 16 by 17 feet and weighs in at more than 100 tons). This mega sculpture was constructed using Pacific Southwest Structures expertise with special projects. Cranes moving and placing boulders to build the Bear dream took timing and teamwork to replicate the artist’s model in real life. Mary Beebe, the collection’s director says “it’s the most challenging project they’ve done. Even finding the boulders was difficult, and then the engineering was very complex.
10,000 sq. ft. cast-in-place, architectural white concrete as-cast finish custom home. The project consisted of slab on grade, curved and angled architectural concrete walls and decks. The duration of the concrete work totaled more that 12 months and consisted of plastic lined forms and feature strip, all wall forms had to be made watertight to facilitate the as-cast finish desired by the architect and owner.
